Photo Biryani: The Urs of Ajmer Sharif Dargah

The Urs is the annual celebration of a Sufi saint’s death date. It is a celebration, rather than a mourning period, because the saint is considered to have married Allah on that date. Ajmer Sharif Dargah is the shrine for Moinuddin Chishti, a charismatic and compassionate spiritual preacher and teacher. He was so influential, and his shrine is so revered, that the Mughal emperors visited his shrine frequently hundreds of years after his death, and millions of people continue visiting to this day. I attended the Urs on March 19, 2021, and it was a fascinating and joyous occasion. Scroll for photos. It is one of the biggest Muslim festivals anywhere in India.
